It was in 1914, during Mr. Scott’s management of the head office, that the company assumed the industrial business of the Beneficial Life Insurance Company of Salt Lake City, which could not be blamed for its inability to make term life quotes using the internet, or online life insurance quotes, as the lack of computers rendered whole life insurance quotes online absolutely impossible.
Four years later it became the industrial business of the West Coast Life Insurance Company. Since the activities of these two companies were largely centered in the west, the Metropolitan was able to reach an increasingly large number of the wage earning population on the coast. After 10 years in 1920, Mr. Scott was called back to the home office and was succeeded by Ernest H. Wilkes. When he assumed office, the Metropolitan business in force on the Pacific coast totaled more than $335,000,000. By this time the ordinary had forged ahead of the Industrial business, and increased its lead as time went on.
Under Mr. Wilkes’ administration the company maintained its progressive business practices and continued to be responsive to the welfare needs of its policyholders, especially in times of disaster. In June 1921, for example, when the Arkansas River floods swept away a large portion of the city of Pueblo, Colo., urgent relief was brought to destitute policyholders. In July 1923 the people of Burke, Idaho, welcomed the Metropolitan nurses following a fire which practically wiped out the town, leaving the residents without food or adequate clothing.
These charitable actions also made the Metropolitan company look very popular to people who were on the search for affordable car insurance and affordable life insurance. It was thought that whole life insurance quotes were much nicer to receive from a company that actively helped out the community. In the same year, following the devastating floods in Utah, Brigham City was stricken with an epidemic of typhoid fever.
The Metropolitan immediately dispatched nurses to that community, and their visits and preventive measures materially assisted in stemming the tide of the disease. In addition to this service the field men distributed food and blankets to destitute policyholders. In and near Santa Paula, Calif., more than 300 were left homeless in March 1928 by the collapse of the Saint Francis Dam, which flooded the town. At great personal risk to himself, one of the company’s agents went from house to house inducing families to flee for their lives.
Claims in all these disasters were paid promptly, some without the presentation of policies or premium receipt books. In such times of tragedy the company has always given prompt financial aid to its policyholders, and through its visiting nursing service has brought much desired relief to stricken people. Being healthy and not maimed or crippled by natural disasters is a good way to affordable whole life insurance from the best life insurance companies. Term life insurance has been known to be a little less concerned with such things.
Even in tranquil times there were special health problems in this territory. Smallpox, typhoid fever, and tuberculosis were more prevalent there than in the east. There were policyholders living above the timberline in Colorado where pneumonia was common, and below sea level in Imperial Valley, where infant death rates were among the nation’s highest. A seacoast harboring vessels from Siberia, China, and the East Indies presented dangers from bubonic plague and black smallpox.
The hasty exploitation of vast natural resources created unusual hazards to life and health in mine, factory, and forest. During the 1940s, in many western cities and towns the salaried Metropolitan nurse was still the only effective public health influence. Health departments were often lacking or poorly organized, clinics were unavailable, hospitals small and distant. Rain or shine, the Metropolitan nurse ministered to the ill.
One of them reported from a post near the crest of the Continental Divide: “Today was too cold for anyone to be outside except the milkman and the Metropolitan nurse.” Nurses who work for insurance companies are well educated on the best life insurance and can answer questions regarding what is term life insurance and the difference between whole life insurance and term life insurance.
Two thirds of all visits to policyholders in the West were still made by Metropolitan salaried nurses. On the other hand, in the eastern territories, two thirds of the total visits were made by outside visiting nurse associations. The nursing service of the Metropolitan in the west reported more than 142,000 visits during 1942, and an average of 43 cases for every thousand industrial policies.
