The basic question on the lips of most Contractors and Small Businesses is this:
“If I purchase cheap accounting software or grab free software from Joe’s Blows Bookkeeping, will I just end up in lots of trouble, is this going to be a smart choice?”
Free and Cheap is Better
To be honest there are some Free and Cheap programs that are not very user friendly. But when you look around there are many that are capable of doing the job.
There is a multitude of Cheap Software on the market and a lot of it is going to be perfect for small business. You must remember that even if the product is not as well known as some of the Corporate Software it does not mean it will not do the Job. As there are a lot of well know products in the market place which have lost touch with what small business really wants.

Fashion
Lets take a break and look at the fashion industry. Does fashion really change from one year to the next, last summer we wore that, and this summer we are going to wear this. NO… This is simply not the case. Yes in the end we do change our clothes so we can wear the latest fashions, but this is only because the clothing designers and corporate giants bombard us with advertisements telling us the fashion has changed, and what was in is now out and what was out is back in again.
There is only one reason why the fashion industry does this, so you buy more clothes. It would not serve their interests if last years clothes were any good as you would not need to buy this years range.
The same goes in any industry. Accounting Software is no difference, just because its on the TV or Radio it still does not mean you will avoid spending all of your weekends pulling your hair out.
So what is the solution?
Shop around… This does not mean purchasing, this means downloading a few trials of small business accounting programs and see for yourself. Find the one that is simple for YOU to use, because you will be the one wasting away in front of the computer.
In the End its your choice.. Do not choice a program because of advertising, or because your accountant uses that brand, choose the one that is simple for YOU to use.
You have better things to do with your spare time… like having a beer or watching the footy…
